“Behold, days are coming, says the L-rd, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Yisra᾽el, and with the house of Yehuda… but this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Yisra᾽el after those days, says the L-rd; I will put my Torah in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their G-d, and they shall be my people…”

-Jeremiah 31:31, 33

“Rabbi Elazar says: Be diligent in learning Torah, and know what to respond to one who denigrates the Torah. Know before Whom you labor–the Master of your work is trustworthy to pay you the wage for your activity.”

-Pirkei Avos 2:14

“While writing this commentary of the New Testament, I had no other goal, as I have said in the first volume, but to reconcile these two enemy sisters: The Church and the Synagogue… to show everyone that the New Testament only comes to show that the root of existence is in the unity of Gd (ahdut ha-Bore) … and also to strengthen the law of Moses (Torat Moshe)… I publish this commentary (to Matthew) in Hebrew for Jews, to introduce them to the New Testament who, until now, have not recognized its beauty (eynam makirim ’et yofya)… Notwithstanding the contrary misconception, the New Testament is in no manner contrary to the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) or to the Talmud.

-Rabbi Eliyahu Tzvi Soloveitchik, Kol Kore

Waykeeper Principles #6 & #8

6. The Jewish writings called, “the New Testament,” are not equal, but are subordinate to the Torah given by G-d at Sinai (and therefore not intended as a Halachic authority).

8. We do not yet have a kosher translation of the “New Testament,” but its general teachings align especially with Hasidic Judaism (e.g. serving G-d with and beyond ‘the letter’).

1 Corinthians 11:1 → 1 Corinthians 11:22 (22)

Chapter 11
1 Become imitators of me, just as I also of Messiah. 2 Now I praise you that in all things you remember me, and hold fast the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is the Messiah, and the head of a woman is the man, and the head of the Messiah is G-d. 4 Every man praying or prophesying with anything down over his head dishonors his head. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is one and the same as if she were shaved.

“The mishna stated: And who is considered a woman who violates the precepts of Jewish women? One who goes out and her head is uncovered. The Gemara asks: The prohibition against a woman going out with her head uncovered is not merely a custom of Jewish women. Rather, it is by Torah law, as it is written with regard to a woman suspected by her husband of having been unfaithful: “And he shall uncover the head of the woman” (Numbers 5:18). And the school of Rabbi Yishmael taught: From here there is a warning to Jewish women not to go out with an uncovered head, since if the Torah states that a woman suspected of adultery must have her head uncovered, this indicates that a married woman must generally cover her head.”

-Talmud Bavli, Ketubot 72a:19

6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of G-d; but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, neither is woman apart from man, nor man apart from woman, in the L-rd. 12 For as the woman is from the man, even so the man also through the woman; but all things are from G-d. 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it fitting for a woman to pray to G-d uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? 15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for the hair is given to her in place of a covering. 16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither do the assemblies of G-d. 17 But in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when you come together in assembly, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may become manifest among you. 20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Master’s supper. 21 For in eating, each one takes his own supper before another; and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the assembly of G-d and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I do not praise.

Monday (2):

1 Corinthians 11:23 → 1 Corinthians 12:11 (23)

23 For I received from the Master what I also delivered to you: that the Master Yeshua, in the night in which he was delivered up, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said: “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; this do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Master’s death until he comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Master in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Master. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and a good number sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the L-rd, that we may not be condemned with the world. 33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 But if anyone hungers, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order whenever I come.

Chapter 12

1 Now concerning the spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 You know that when you were of the Gentiles, you were led astray to the voiceless idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of G-d says, “Yeshua is accursed,” and no one can say, “Yeshua is Master,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are diversities of gracious gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are diversities of services, but the same L-rd; 6 and there are diversities of workings, but the same G-d who works all in all. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the benefit of all. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom, and to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to a different one faith in the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healings in the one Spirit, 10 to another workings of powers, to another prophecy, to another discernings of spirits, to a different one kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But the one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as the Spirit wills.

Tuesday (3):

1 Corinthians 12:12 → 1 Corinthians 12:31 (20)

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of the body, being many, are one body, so also is the Messiah. 13 For by one Spirit we were all immersed into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For indeed the body is not one member but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” does it for this reason cease to be of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” does it for this reason cease to be of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be? 18 But now G-d has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He desired. 19 But if they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now there are many members, but one body.

“Thus it is with matters of Torah. First, a man must look towards the world to come and not disturb himself with worldly matters. Second, he must not harm anyone of Israel, as all of Israel makes up one body and if he harms another it is as if he is harming one of his own limbs.”

-Mei HaShiloach, Volume I, Numbers, Bamidbar 4

21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 Rather, much more those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; 23 and those which we reckon less honorable members of the body, on these we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable members have more abundant propriety, 24 but our presentable members have no need. But G-d composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that which lacked, 25 that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is glorified, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Messiah, and members individually. 28 And G-d has set some in the assembly: first shluchim, second prophets, third teachers, after that powers, then gifts of healings, helps, governings, kinds of tongues. 29 Are all shluchim? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of powers? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And yet I show you a still more excellent way.

Wednesday (4):

1 Corinthians 13:1 → 1 Corinthians 14:5 (18)

Chapter 13
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body that I may boast, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is longsuffering, love is kind; love does not envy; love does not boast; it is not puffed up; 5 does not behave unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, reckons no evil; 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices together in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; whether tongues, they will cease; whether knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be brought to nothing. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I thought as a child, I reasoned as a child; when I became a man, I put away the things of the child. 12 For now we see through a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know fully, even as I also am fully known. 13 But now there remain faith, hope, love—these three; but the greatest of these is love.

“At this time, seven chambers are opened. The first chamber is the chamber of love, the second is the chamber of awe, the third is the chamber of mercy, the fourth is the chamber of prophecy of the shining mirror, the fifth is the chamber of prophecy of the opaque mirror, the sixth is the chamber of justice and the seventh chamber is in the chamber of judgment.”

-Holy Zohar, Bereshit 17:193

Chapter 14

1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, but rather that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to G-d, for no one understands him; yet in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and encouragement and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. 5 I would that you all spoke in tongues, but rather that you prophesied; for greater is he who prophesies than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, that the assembly may receive edification.

Thursday (5):

1 Corinthians 14:6 → 1 Corinthians 14:25 (20)

6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with tongues, how will I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching? 7 Likewise lifeless things which give sound, whether lute or harp, if they do not give a distinction in the notes, how will it be known what is being piped or played? 8 For indeed if the trumpet gives an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So likewise you, unless you utter through the tongue clear speech, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, ever so many kinds of languages in the world, and none is without meaning. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a barbarian to the one speaking, and the one speaking will be a barbarian to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound for the edification of the assembly. 13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray also with the mind; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing also with the mind. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will the one who occupies the place of the ungifted say the “Amen” at your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank G-d I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, do not become children in understanding; but in malice be infants, but in understanding be mature. 21 In the Torah it is written: “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people; and yet, even so, they will not hear Me,” says the L-rd. 22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole assembly comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninstructed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there comes in an unbeliever or uninstructed person, he is convicted by all, he is examined by all; 25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest, and so, falling upon his face, he will worship G-d, declaring that G-d is truly among you.

Friday (6):

1 Corinthians 14:26 → 1 Corinthians 15:11 (26)

26 What is the conclusion then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two, or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to G-d. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern. 30 But if anything is revealed to another sitting by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

“the Gemara reports that Rabbi Avdimi from Haifa says: From the day that the Temple was destroyed prophecy was taken from the prophets and given to the Sages. The Gemara expresses astonishment: Is that to say that a Sage is not fit to be a prophet? Rabbi Avdimi seems to say that these are two distinct categories of people. The Gemara explains: This is what Rabbi Avdimi is saying: Even though prophecy was taken from the prophets, it was not taken from the Sages. Ameimar said: And a Sage is greater than a prophet, as it is stated: “And a prophet has a heart of wisdom” (Psalms 90:12)”

-Talmud Bavli, Bava Batra 12a, The William Davidson Talmud (Koren – Steinsaltz)

33 For G-d is not of disorder, but of peace. As in all the assemblies of the set-apart ones, 34 let the women keep silent in the assemblies, for it is not permitted for them to speak; but let them be subject, just as the Torah also says. 35 And if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak in assembly. 36 Or did the word of G-d come out from you? Or did it reach you alone? 37 If anyone reckons himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things I write to you are the commandment of the Master. 38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39 Therefore, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Chapter 15

1 Now I make known to you, brothers, the Good News which I proclaimed to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 through which also you are being saved, if you hold fast that word which I proclaimed to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you among the first things that which I also received: that Messiah died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he has been raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Kefa, then to the twelve. 6 After that he appeared to over five hundred brothers at once, of whom the greater part remain until now, but some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to Ya’akov, then to all the shluchim. 8 And last of all he appeared to me also, as to one untimely born. 9 For I am the least of the shluchim, who am not worthy to be called an shaliach, because I persecuted the assembly of G-d. 10 But by the grace of G-d I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of G-d which was with me. 11 Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we proclaim, and so you believed.

Shabbat (7):

1 Corinthians 15:12 → 1 Corinthians 15:31 (20)

12 Now if Messiah is proclaimed that he has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither has Messiah been raised. 14 And if Messiah has not been raised, then our proclamation is vain, and your faith also is vain. 15 And we are even found false witnesses of G-d, because we testified concerning G-d that He raised up Messiah—whom He did not raise up, if then the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Messiah has not been raised. 17 And if Messiah has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Messiah have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Messiah, we are of all men the most to be pitied. 20 But now Messiah has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since through a man came death, through a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in the Messiah all shall be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Messiah the firstfruits, then those of the Messiah at his coming. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers up the kingdom to G-d, the Father, when he brings to nothing all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign till He has put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that will be brought to nothing is death. 27 For “He has put all things under his feet.” But when He says “all things are put under,” it is evident that He who put all things under him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to him, then the son himself will also be subject to the One who put all things under him, that G-d may be all in all. 29 Otherwise, what will they do who are immersed for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they immersed for them? 30 And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour? 31 I die daily—by your boasting which I have in Messiah Yeshua our Master, brothers.
