Gematria is the numerical value of the Hebrew letters. Just like Roman numerals, there were no separate symbol-systems for numbers and letters in ancient Israel. The letters functioned as numbers with the first letter representing the number ‘one,’ the second letter representing ‘two,’ and so on. This means that every word in Hebrew represents a number specific to that word and the sum of its letters/numbers. The study of the numerical value of the words in the Hebrew Bible is an ancient method of Jewish study and many wondrous discoveries have been made in it, leading many people to believe that Hebrew is truly a holy language and the one with which G-D spoke the Universe into creation.
Most of the Gematria I have learned has been from Ariel Cohen Alloro, an Orthodox Jew who lives in Jerusalem. He says that Gematria makes Torah a science, because mathematics is the ‘mother of all sciences.’ Math operates under fixed laws that do not change due to our subjective experience. So too, a study of Biblical Gematria leads us to understand G-D’s will, if we let the facts speak for themselves more than our opinion of them.
There is an idea expressed in the Zohar and repeated in the book, Kol HaTor (chapter 3), that when the Prophet Isaiah states that “every valley will be raised,” “this refers to gematria.” “In the final days,” the study of Gematria will become elevated over the more popular methods of Bible study, which will be lowered. Kol HaTor talks about “the revelation of the secrets of gematria computations that concern the footsteps of the Messiah” and says, “as the footsteps of the Messiah approach, more and more gematria hints appear.”

It is as if Yeshua’s last cry on the Cross was to direct all attention to the Ancient of Days and to warn against all idolatry made of himself, who truly died as a man, even the glorious Messiah…
